March 2014: More Killing, More Arrests

Cult clashes leave 20 dead in Uniben

By ,   /   March 5, 2014

More than twenty persons are reported to have died from fresh violent cult clashes around the Ekosodin village near the Ugbowo campus of the University of Benin, Benin City since last week.
Ekosodin community is a safe haven for notorious criminals and cult members who pose as undergraduates of the University, forcing the residents to press for a state of emergency in the area in order to nip the regular killings in the community on the bud.

Nigerian Pilot gathered that, corpses of two victims identified as Osas and Jack Bauer were found at the main gate of the university while a third identified as Galaxy was found along the Ekosodin road.

Some residents also disclosed about the corpses of several students who were hacked to death in their sleep in the community as two rival cult groups battled for supremacy on campus.

It was gathered that disagreement over the sharing formula of some money donated to the Edo Rainbow Coalition, a body of a rival cult members from the university, by an APC gubernatorial aspirant to support his bid ignited the duel.

The body was initially to drum support for a governorship aspirant and provide security during elections across the state but has recently run out of jobs before the aspirant who brought the money that led to these renewed clashes contracted it.

It was learnt that the cult war is between rival members of two groups over who should now lead the coalition since the one group, which has led it since 2012 insisted it must continue.

When the Police Public Relations Officer of the Edo Sate Police command, DSP Moses Eguavoen was contacted on phone, he said they were yet to be briefed by the local police unit.

Cultists on rampage in Nsukka

By Chinenyeh Ozor, Nsukka

Two rival cult groups in the University Town of Nsuka, Enugu State, Vikings and Black Axe, in what looks like a reappraisal attack, clashed and killed three people including a first year student of Uiversity of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, a driver attached to Enugu State Transport Company, ENTRACO and one other notorious cult member.

Crime Alert gathered that the rival cult groups have been on the neck of one another for several years, maiming and hacking each other to death in the slightest simmering differences. Sources said last Monday at Achara road in Nsukka Urban, one Ndubuisi Eze (aka Tafa) was shot dead by an unidentified cult group, his head was cut off and laid behind his lifeless body.

Investigations revealed that the deceased Ndubuisi had been on the wanted list of the other rival cult group for over two years, he absconded from the town over an alleged involvement in several killings, kidnap, robbery among others.   It was learnt that the said Ndubuisi Eze sneaked into Nsukka having fled Enugu where it is alleged that Vikings cult group and Black Axe held sway for days, unknown to him that the other rival group had ambushed him at Nsukka.

Investigations further revealed that Ndubuisi had gone to charge his phone but on his way back to his house around 7pm , a group of fierce- looking men shot him.  Sensing danger, he reportedly ran with the gun shot wound. The gang, in a hot chase, followed him to a point where he fell down, they then pumped bullets into him and beheaded him and fled.

While fleeing through Amukwa village in Nsukka, the gang  accosted one Ebuka Asogwa, a first year student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka sitting in front of their house, they reportedly questioned him briefly and in the process, shot him dead.  Ebuka had been a car wash attendant along University road for years only to gain admission this year and was killed in front of their compound.

The alleged killer cult group while fleeing entered a popular drinking joint “Casablanca” at Odenigwe area where students were watching football and shot severally into the air while students and residents of the area scampered from pillar to post to escape from the scene while the group collected all the handsets that were charged as that time.

Meanwhile, a driver attached to Enugu State Transport Company, ENTRACO, whose identity could not be ascertained as at press time, was shot dead around 6.30pm along Achara road in Nsukka town. Reports revealed that the ENTRACO driver had allegedly been an old member of one of the cult groups and took part in several operations of his group.

The driver was said to be returning from work on Thursday night when the rival cult group accosted him and killed him instantly. The rival group, it was learnt ,shot indiscriminately into the air to scare passersby and fled to an unknown destination.

When Crime Alert contacted Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ebere Amarizu for confirmation and comment, he said they were suspected cult gangs in Nsukka and assured that the police were on it.

“On receipt of the information, both the police and the vigilante group swung into action by mobilizing and storming the areas and met a group of cult members, popularly known as Black Axe Confraternity initiating new members while the initiation was going on,” Kwaji said.

“The cultists were singing and shouting” the action which made it easy for the police and the vigilantes to “Identified the location of the cultist that led to their arrest,” he added.

He said one locally made revolver pistol, four round of 9mm life ammunition, one empty shell, a black beret with an occultist crest, pieces of razor blades and a bucket containing blood were recovered from them

He said the case was under investigation would be taken to court for prosecution as soon as investigations were concluded”.

The PPRO warned those involved in cultist activities in the state to as a matter of urgency desist from such acts as the police would not hesitate to prosecute them.

Uneasy calm in Benin over cult clashes

by on Mar 1, 2014

For three days running, Benin City, the Edo State capital, has been under intense battle and exchange of gunfire between members of cult groups.

The battle that is believed to be between members of the Black Axe and those of Eiye Confraternity, two secret groups with strong membership in the ancient city, has claimed about 20 lives.

As at press time yesterday many residents were observed leaving the community for fear of more attacks. While the cult clashes had been on since late December last year, in New Benin and other areas, it reached feverish peak this week with fierce battles in Ekosodin, an outskirt community located at the back of the sprawling University of Benin with a large number of student population and where crimes are relatively committed with impunity.

According to some members of the cult groups, who spoke in anonymity with Saturday Mirror yesterday evening, a couple of members have been “felled” in the past three days.

It was further learnt that no less than five of the killings were carried out between UNIBEN and Ekosodin community even as some other victims were chased to different locations in the state capital.

Speaking on the development, Edo State Commissioner of Police, Foluso Adebanjo, said about two suspects have been arrested with one confirmed dead in the latest clash.

The state police spokesman, DSP Eguavoen also corroborated the coimmissioner’s confirmation of arrested members. It was reliably gathered that the latest clash might have resulted from the continuous struggle for supremacy between the two groups with the one with the upper hand getting the rights and privileges to higher and bigger socio-political goodwill.

This fact also accounts for the subtle attempt being made to link the latest clash to the activities of The Rainbow Coalition, a socio-political pressure group that is based in Benin City.
