Enugu Cult War: 28 killed in a fresh attack

About 28 persons have been killed in fresh cult clashes in Enugu State within the past week. The latest killings were preceded by the murder of two suspected cultists in the state capital. The renewed killings and clashes have led to apprehension among the residents of the state and its environs. Already, the police have arrested 23 suspects in connection with the violent clashes and killings. Two victims said to be members of Baga cult group, were killed on Sunday evening, one at Secretariat Quarters and the second at Moore House Close. At the time of filing this report, Police could not confirm Sunday’s clashes, but it was learnt that the residents no longer stay outside beyond 8pm, thereby affecting night life in the metropolis and the suburbs such as Emene, Abakpa, Ugwuaji, Gariki and Trans-Ekulu Although the identities of the victims are yet to be ascertained, the Police are believed to have taken custody of the corpses. Sources said that the two cult groups engaged in the war are Neo-Black Movement of Africa (also known as Black Axe and Bagas. Last Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, had in a statement confirmed the cult war, but did not disclose the number of people killed. He said that police had arrested 23 people suspected to have links or membership of the groups and pledged that the command would do everything possible to bring the situation under control. He said: “Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, recently raided suspected criminal hideouts within the metropolis which included Artisan and Njemanze in Ogui Road where no fewer than 23 people were arrested with substances suspected to be Indian hemp.”
