CULT WAR: Three die in latest Edo cult clash

August 24, 2016

No fewer than three persons have been reportedly killed in a renewed clash between rival cult groups in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State.

One of the victims, identified as Papa Obodo, was said to have had his head severed while the other, simply identified as Osaze, was shot at a close range at Second East Circular road on Tuesday.

It was learnt that the fight involved members of the Aiye otherwise known as Black Axe and Eiye Confraternity group.

It was gathered that trouble started on Sunday when a fight broke between members of the Black Axe and Eiye Confraternity at a popular bar on Sakponba Road.

The disagreement was said to have taken a twist when some gunmen reportedly shot an unidentified man to death within the neighbourhood.

It was learnt that Osaze had earlier escaped from his assailants when they stormed his home within the area.

The gunmen were, however, said to have given their target a hot chase before he was shot.

“They (gunmen) first hit Osaze with machete on the head and later shot him to death. And the cultists were overheard chanting ‘one, one score-line’ after killing their victim,” the witness said.

When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, attributed the incident, which he described as an “isolated cult violence,” to the killing of one person earlier in June.

Ezike said, “I would not really say that it was a cult clash because when you talk about a cult clash, you are talking about one group against the other. But I think there was an isolated cult violence.

“Some time in June, somebody was killed in a cult-related manner and somebody was suspected. The person who was suspected, I think, had been evading being seen. Somehow, on Sunday, we found him shot. That means it must have been the other group who suspected him for the June matter that took it out on him.

“By yesterday, his own group started looking for the other group and also shot three people.” Two died. .The commissioner said security operatives had commenced investigation into the matter.
